Kodagu Education & Social Service Trust (KESST) - Report for 2021-22 (April 2022)

The year 2021-22 started under the grim shadow of Second wave of Covid-19. There was a state-wide lockdown with night and weekend curfews, rampaging infection and many deaths. Education classes were disrupted and most of the year on-line classes were the norm.


Induction of New Trustee:

Shri Pattada Dhanu Uthaiah was formally appointed as a Trustee on 20 March 2022. His varied and valuable experience as Past President of Lions Club Gonikoppa and Region Chairperson, Secretary of Lions Educational institution, Principal Trustee of Mahadeva Temple, Betoli; Secretary of Kodava Samaj, Ammathi and Treasurer of Kodagu Lions Trust for the Physically Handicapped will create immense value addition to KESST.


Support for Education and Basic Quality of Life:

In the financial year 2021-22, KESST has incurred an expenditure of Rs 18,34,608 to support 119 children, of which 70 are girls, 10 are orphans being cared for by grandparents or other relatives, 40 have mothers as a single parent. In addition two girls, one in MBBS and one in B.Sc Nursing were given financial support of Rs 88,300/-.


Sainik School Coaching (for academic session 2021-22):

Coaching for Entrance for Class 6 was conducted from 2nd November 2021 to 7th January 2022 at Lions School, Gonikoppa with 10 students attending the coaching. Expenditure covering remuneration for teachers and study material was Rs 3,99,000/-.


Awareness for Career Options in Defence:

Colonel Chenanda Appaiah (Umesh) addressed career awareness session on 10 April 2021 at Triveni School, Virajpet, under the aegis of Kodava Samaja Virajpet and KESST.


Interaction with Rotary Madikeri:

In July 2021 in a video interactive session between Rotary Madikeri and KEEST the feasibility of cooperation in the fields of coaching for Sainik School Entrance Examination, NDA and Combined Defence Services Examinations was discussed.


Coaching for written entrance exam for Army Jawan entrance:

Covid has disrupted the Army recruitment schedule. On receipt that the Army Recruitment Rally at Kolar was scheduled from 7th to 12th May 2021 a free residential coaching camp for physical tests and written examination was planned from 7th to 30th April 2021 at Virajpet. Due to the second wave of Covid the Rally was cancelled and the free residential camp was also terminated prematurely on 21 April 2021. Expenditure covering accommodation, food, special diet and remuneration for teachers was Rs 85,734/-. With four more candidates clearing the Army selection and one clearing the Air Force selection in early 2021, a total of 61 candidates trained by KESST have joined the Armed Forces.

State level cross country Race for Youth Eligible for Joining Defence Force -11 October 2021 at Kushalnagar (Kodagu):

KESST along with Kushalnagar Ex-Servicemen Association organised State Level Cross Country Race at Kushalnagar on 10 October 2021.

Girls - 5.2 kms with 35 girls participating. Chaitra came first with a timing of 23minutes.

Boys - 145 boys ran 8.2 kms. Bhim Shankar came first with a timing of 25 minutes.

Army Veteran AR Janardhana (18 Madras), Subedar K.G Somanna , B Ganesh Singh (all Madras regiment), International shooter and coach Captain Subbaiah from Ex-Servicemen Association were the main organisers. Shri Satish of Kaveri Textiles, Head of Kushalnagar Red Cross, and Dr Chethan, the Taluk Medical Officer Govt Hospital provided medical cover. First six positions in both categories received cash awards from KSSET .Subedar Somanna gave cash awards to the boy and girl securing seventh position of Rs 400 each. Expenditure covering on prizes and other expenses was Rs 46,150/-.


Free Coaching for Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE) conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC):

Free coaching camp for CDS examination scheduled on 14 November 2021 was conducted at Virajpet for five weeks from 4th to 30th October 2021. Expenditure was Rs 50,000/-.


Coaching for Central and Civil Services Examination:

Two youth, one girl and one boy, have been identified and are being supported on a long term basis of not less than two years, to prepare for Central and State Civil Services Examinations. Their fees for coaching institutions, board and lodging and pocket expenses are being catered for. Expenditure covering coaching fees, PG and other expenses was Rs 1,03,000/-.


COVID-19 Aid by Kodagu Education and Social Service Trust (KESST) - July –September 2021:

KESST responded to the need of the hour during the Covid19 second surge and consequent state wide lockdown in May-June 2021 by distributing over 200 free food kits and other Covid safety material comprising PPE, masks etc for a total cost of Rs 4,13,832/-. The beneficiaries included Covid Warrior volunteers performing last rites of Covid fatal cases, working in PHC, ASHA workers and teaching and non-teaching staff of schools.


KESST Office at Virajpet:

KESST office in the old Virajpet Kodava Samaja office building, adjoining Triveni School is fully functional. The office is open from 10am to 5pm from Monday to Saturday and is closed on Sundays and state government holidays.


Administrative Expenses 2021-22:

In keeping with the tenets of KESST administrative expenses have been managed at 4% of the annual expenditure.

Kodagu Education & Social Service Trust (KESST) - Report for 2020-21

Support for Education and Basic Quality of Life: 

In the financial year 2020-21, KESST has incurred an expenditure of Rs 11,89,577 to support 89 children, of which 51 are girls, in various stages of education and financial destitution.


Sainik School Coaching (for academic session 2021-22):

With schools being closed no formal coaching could be conducted. However, paid coaching for nine children was facilitated by arranging for teachers and class rooms in Kodava Samaja's Triveni School, Virajpet. The exam was rescheduled on account of the pandemic and conducted on 7th Feb 2021. For the first time the exam was conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The spread of awareness and interest in admissions to Sainik School has been very encouraging. However, parents and children have to commence preparation for the entrance exam well in advance, even two years, to be able to get listed in the merit list (top 90 for boys and top 10 for girls in Class VI, and top 15 for boys in Class IX). The cut off marks for medical for general category children for Class 6 was 205-225 and for Class 9 was 290-310.


Awareness for Career Options in Defence:  

A webinar for career options in the defence was conducted under the aegis of SMS College, Arameri (Virajpet) on 24 December 2020. A workshop was also conducted at Oceanic College of Education, Bangalore, on 20 Feb 2021. Post the webinar and workshop many children reached out for personal clarifications. 


Recruitment under Army Sports Quota at Artillery Centre, Hyderabad with special emphasis for 37 Field Regiment (Coorg) on 7-8 Dec 2020:

In conjunction with 37 Field Regiment (Coorg), KESST organised screening, coaching for physical tests, diet and documentation for a group of candidates on 10 Nov 2020. Serving officers from Kodagu tool keen interest in coordinating and following up various aspect and support to KESST. KESST arranged for a KSRTC bus to transport the candidates and some guardians and also made arrangements for stay at Hyderabad. Many candidates became ineligible due to last minute revisions in age eligibility and validity of sports achievement certificates. Three candidates were shortlisted and have to appear in the written exam.


Coaching for written entrance exam for Army Jawan entrance:  

Army written entrance exam was scheduled for 28 Feb 2021. Coaching classes for candidates appearing for Army Jawan written exam (after clearing physical and medical tests) was conducted in from 15 Jan to 15 Feb 2021 at Gonikoppal at Lions School premises (28 candidates) and weekend classes at Anugra College premises in Kushalnagar from 03 Nov 2019 to 21 Feb 2021 (23 candidates). Unfortunately the test was cancelled at the last moment and fresh dates are awaited.


Opening of KESST Office at Virajpet on 1st Nov 2020:

Thanks to Kodava Samaja Virajpet, KESST opened its office in the old Kodava Samaja office building, adjoining Triveni School, on 1st Nov 2020. The office is open from 10am to 5pm from Monday to Saturday, and will be closed on Sundays and state government holidays.

Kodagu Education & Social Service Trust (KESST) - Report for 2019-20

Support for Education and Basic Quality of Life: 

In the financial year 2019-20) KESST has incurred an expenditure of Rs 11.33 Lakhs to support 81 children, of which 49 are girls, in various stages of education and financial destitution. 


Sainik School Coaching (for academic session 2019-20):

Eleven children were coached in Lions School, Gonikoppal. While all children passed the entrance exam none could figure in the final merit list. Analysis of the performance indicated the need for greater involvement of the parents and focus of children while filling the Optical Mark Reader (OMR) answer sheet.


Awareness for State & Central Civil Services Exam:  

KESST has been conducting Career Awareness Workshops (CA Workshop) covering fields of defence, civil services and sports. A workshop was conducted at Sai Shankar Educational Institutions, Ponnampet in Dec 2019. The awareness program has resulted in sharing of contact details of experts and numerous call have been received and one-on-one awareness sessions have been conducted. 


Special Maths Coaching:

KEEST, in conjunction with CIT Ponnampet, conducting Special Maths Coaching for competitive entrance exams (NDA and CET etc) for children of PUC and 1st year Engineering from 15 July 2019 to 15 August 2019 (27 students). Due to the disruption in the last week due to floods in South Kodagu, a special “catch-up” session was conducted from 06 Nov to 15 Nov 2019 (16 students).


Coaching for Army Jawan Written Entrance Exam & State Police Constable Entrance Exam:  

Coaching classes for candidates appearing for Army Jawan written exam (after clearing physical and medical tests) was conducted in from 4-15 Nov 2019 at Gonikoppal at Lions School premises (24 candidates) and Anugra College premises in Kushalnagar from 03 Nov 2019 to 16 Jan 2020(28 candidates for Army and one for police). Of the 52 candidates who underwent coaching for Army, 26 have confirmed that they have cleared the written exam and have reported for training.

Kodagu Education & Social Service Trust (KESST) - Report for 2018-19

Support for Education and Basic Quality of Life: 

In 2018-19 KESST incurred an expenditure of Rs 9 Lakhs to support 54 children in various stages of education and financial destitution. KESST got actively involved in providing material and monetary support to the landslide affected people in Kodagu district. Our trust members visited the affected areas alongwith other social organisations to assess the damages in the area. Support for Education of the needy being our main aim, we have provided material and monetary support totaling Rs 13.75 lakhs to landslide affected children (77 children). KESST also facilitated and supported the admission and administration of 127 children from the affected areas to be admitted to Sai Shankar (Residential) School, Ponnampet. All the 127 children are being provided free schooling and hostel facility, being supported by different organisations.  


Sainik School Coaching (for academic session 2019-20):

For the 2019-20 academic session 10 children were prepared for theSainik School entrance exam, out of which 7 boys took the exam, one boy, Pretham NG s/o Nagesh (servng solider) successfully cleared the admission process and will be joining the school in June 2019.


Career Awareness Workshops:  

KESST continued conduct of Career Awareness Workshops (CA Workshop) covering fields of defence, central and state civil services; and sports. Experts from different fields covered aspects of eligibility and preparation. In addition a comprehensive compilation of all options was provided in a booklet form. CA Workshops were conducted in Ponnampet (CIT) on 21st April 2018, at Mysore on 3rd June 2018 and at Sai Shankar Educational Institutions, Ponnampet on 16th Dec 2019. 


Special Maths Coaching:

KEEST, in conjunction with CIT Ponnampet, conducted Special Maths Coaching for competitive entrance exams (NDA and CET etc) for children of PUC and 1st year Engineering from 15 July 2018 to 18 August 2018. 


Coaching for Army Jawan Written Entrance Exam:  

Coaching classes for candidates appearing for Army Jawan written exam (after clearing physical and medical tests) was conducted in Dec 2018 at Gonikoppal at Lions School premises alongwith food and accommodation for out-station participants. Out of 29 participants, 12 confirmed that they have been placed in merit and have joined the Army.

Exemption under Section 80G of Income Tax Act:

KESST received approval for exemption under Section 80G of Income Tax Act whereby 50% of contributed amount would be excluded from taxable income of the contributor. (Approval No CIT(Exemption)/BANGALORE/80G/2018-19/A/10103 issued vide Order no ITBA/EXM/S/80G/2018-19/1013883857 (1) dt 29 Nov 2018.) Donors are required to provide PAN Number, name as per PAN and full address to avail of 80G exemption benefit.

Kodagu Education & Social Service Trust (KESST) - Report for 2017-18

Recent Activities 

The year 2017-18 was one of consolidation for KESST. The coaching program being conducted for the Sainik School Entrance exam, at Lions School Gonikoppal, continued. Support was enhanced for numerous children who are being provided quality education, and for destitute women and children to have a better quality of life.  


Sainik School Coaching (for academic session 2018-19)

The Management of Lions School Gonikoppal were happy to continue the special (coaching) class program. Eight eligible children underwent coaching from July 2017 till January 2018. 

In addition to the above, we coached other children for the personal interview. A total of three children, two in Class 6 and one in Class 9 have been selected to join Sainik School Kodagu, taking the total contribution to Sainik School to seven. Change in Age for Class 6  

KESST efforts to change the eligible age for admission to Sainik School was partially successful. With effect from the next academic session (year 2019-20, entrance exam in Jan 2019), the age for Class 6 as on 31 March (of the year of admission) must be between 10 and 12 years. This will make children in Class 5 too eligible for the entrance exam. 


Awareness for State & Central Civil Services Exam 

KESST commenced conduct of Career Awareness Workshops (CAW) covering fields of defence, civil services and sports. The expert speakers covered aspects of eligibility and preparation. In addition, a comprehensive compilation of all options was provided in a booklet form. The first CAW was conducted on 29 October 2017 at Bangalore and Gonikoppal (Lions School) on 16 December 2017. 


Support for Education and Basic Quality of Life  

KESST incurred an expenditure of Rs Nine Lakhs to support 63 children (42 girls, 21 boys) in various stages of education and financial destitution.

KESST: Our Activities

  • Provide students financial assistance for fees and other school expenses.
  • Offer assistance to schools to acquire – computers and library books. 
  • Help students prepare for competitive entrance examinations.
  • Support families comprising single mothers and girl children.
  • Assist with job placement for single parents and students who graduate.

Assistance to students in Fees & Costs  

The assistance is provided in a sensitive manner by maintaining their need for a high degree of confidentiality. Other contributions in the form of laptops and desktop computers (used and new) and books, were coordinated from various IT professionals (and companies).  

We have been able to support some of the less-privileged families with financial assistance that varies from Rs 600/- per year for government-aided schools, to Rs 5000/- per year for children in private schools. 


Education – assistance to help students prepare for Competitive Entrance Examinations 

In 2015 and 2016, coaching was undertaken to prepare interested students for the entrance examinations to Classes 6 & 9 for the Sainik School, the National Defence Academy (NDA), and the Naval Academy (NA). 

Coaching in the subject of Maths, meant as preparation for the NDA and NA, is offered at the Cauvery College Campus in Gonikoppal, Kodagu.  


Assistance to Schools

Assistance in terms of infrastructure and equipment was arranged for schools.

Some of these schools are: 

  • Triveni School Virajpet - the fees of 25 students were paid by donors, and a school building worth Rs. 8 lakhs was constructed by one of the volunteers through her company.
  • AppachaKavi School, Ponnampet - fees for 22 students was contributed, a library was set up and computers donated. 
  • General Thimmaya School, Madikeri - five laptops were donated to the school. Books were arranged for the library.
  • Kakkabe School - contributions for fees were arranged.
  • Cheyandanne School - contributions for fees were arranged.
  • Shree Ramakrishna Sharadashrama, Ponnampet - A volunteer arranged for medical equipment worth more than Rs. 15 lakhs through the Corporate Social Responsibility funds of her Bangalore-based Software Company. 
  • Birunani College - funded furniture for college.
  • A gift of English Dictionarieswere arranged from the Rotary Club of Kushalnagar, to over 50 schools in Kodagu, Mysore and Bangalore.
  • Currently nearly 100 students are being supported, in various ways.

Social Service – supporting families with single mothers  

When we come across families with mothers who are widowed or divorced, and in financial difficulty, we arrange for jobs for the mother or other family members of working age. We also go out of our way to provide single mothers who have girl children, with the support they need.   

With the support that we provide, they are able to get better housing and support for the children’s continued education. Five such destitute families are currently being supported.

KESST: Latest Update

KESST has received 80G exemption for donations. Contributions are exempted under Section 80G of Income Tax Act as per Approval No CIT(Exemption)/BANGALORE/80G/2018-19/A/10103 issued vide Order no ITBA/EXM/S/80G/2018-19/1013883857 (1) dt 29 Nov 2018. Donors are required to provide PAN Number, name as per PAN and full address to avail of 80G benefit.

In 2018-19, Rs 13.75 lakhs was distributed to 77 Flood affected children. They were assisted for part annual fees and transportation costs (due to relocation) . We estimate over Rs 25 lakhs would be required in 2019-20 to support upto 150 children. Donations are welcome.
