KESST:
Work Done

In these few years from inception, our small team was able to take up many activities to help educate underprivileged children.

Some of the activities that we have taken up are as follows:

  • Assistance to students
  • Assistance to schools
  • Social Service
  • Assistance in preparation for competitive exams

Kodagu Education & Social Service Trust (KESST)
- Report for 2023-24 (April 2024)

In 2023-24 KESST enlarged its activities to include support to educational institutions and in the field of livelihood for low income groups while continuing its legacy programs.


Support for Education:
KESST retained the priority of supporting orphans, children of single mothers and needy families. In the financial year 2023-24 KESST has incurred an expenditure of Rs 26,18,935/- to support 126 children, of which 64 are girls, 10 are abandoned by family or orphans being cared for by grandparents or other relatives, 56 have mothers as a single parent. School notebooks worth Rs 30,263.72 were given to needy children. In addition, two girls, one for Civil Services coaching and one girl in B. Sc Nursing was given financial support of Rs 1,03,800/-.

Sainik School Entrance Exam Coaching (for academic session 2024-25):
Coaching for Entrance for Class 6 was conducted from 1st July 2023 to 27th January 2024 (exam was held on 28 Jan 2024) at Lions School, Gonikoppal with 14 students attending the coaching. Expenditure covering remuneration for teachers and study material was Rs 3,56,500/-. amongst parents and children in the district as seen in the increase in number of children taking the exam.

The participation of parents in the child’s preparation continues to be below the desired requirement despite our best efforts to impress upon the need for their continued supervision of the child’s studies and homework. Notwithstanding this we plan to persevere in this activity as there are other indicators of increased awareness about the exam and opportunity.

Awareness for Career Options in Defence:

Many boys and girls were counselled and guided in one-on-one sessions. KESST also participated in the Batte Bolli (Career Awareness) Program conducted by Kodava Samaja, Bangalore on 5th August 2023 and in a panel discussion on careers at the Global Kodava Summit at Madikeri on 30th December 2023. As part of awareness KESST will be distributing copies of the book "Kodavas...Passion for Uniform" by Major General Kodendera Arjun Muthanna.

Many children and parents reach out to KESST at the last minute for guidance for the interview for the Services Selection Board. With increased awareness, it is hoped that children and parents will reach out for guidance in an earlier time frame to facilitate better preparation and success in clearing the interview.

Coaching for Central and Civil Services Examination:
Two youths, one girl and one boy, have been identified and are being supported on a long-term basis of not less than two years, to prepare for Central and State Civil Services Examinations. Their fees for coaching institutions, board and lodging and pocket expenses are being catered for. Planned expenditure covering coaching fees, PG and other expenses was Rs 55,000/-

Guidance for Army Jawan – Agniveer 2024 for Men and Women Military Police for South Karnataka (and Kodagu district):
Army announced Agniveer 2024 for Men and Women Military Police for South Karnataka (and Kodagu district). Registration was open from 13 Feb 2024 to 22 March 2024. Candidates whose applications are 
accepted will have to take the online Common Entrance Exam from 22 April 2024 onwards. KEEST facilitated online application and has offered free coaching for the exam.

Educational Infrastructure:
KESST undertook emergency repair of roofing of Surlabi Government school for Rs 25,000/-. KESST incurred an expenditure of Rs 3,49,937/- on account of Computers and Audio Visual Projection system for Lions High School, Gonikoppa and college of Murnad Education Society.

Support for Kodava Language Post Graduate Diploma (Ten month) Course in Kodagu University, Jnana Kaveri campus in Chikka Aluwara, Kushalanagar:
On receiving reports of lack of students and likelihood of cancellation of the course KESST agreed to support the fees of the students in current academic year and subsequent years. The expenditure incurred is Rs 1,21,550/-.

Financial Support for Participation in Foreign Marathon Race at Valencia Spain:
Appachanganda B Belliappa’s coach reached out to KESST for financial support for his participation in the Valencia (Spain) Marathon conducted on 4th December 2023. In a short duration, KESST was able to collect Rs 2.15 lakhs enabling Belliappa to participate in the event.

2nd State-level Cross Country Race for Youth Eligible for Joining Defence Forces -19 November 2023 at Kushalnagar (Kodagu):
KESST along with Kushalnagar Ex-Servicemen Association organised the 2nd State Level Cross Country Race at Kushalnagar on 19 November 2023. The 1st Edition of the run was conducted on 10 October 2021. A total of 144 youth participated as under: -

Girls - 5 km with 59 girls participating.
Chaitra, a student of Alva’s College, came first with a time of 17 minutes retaining the first prize of the 1st edition.
Boys - 85 boys ran 7.5 km.
Rahul, a student of Sports Hostel, Mysore, came first with a time of 23 minutes.

Prizes were distributed with the first prize of Rs 10,000/- for the 7.5km and Rs 6,000/- for the 5 km run. The total expenditure for arrangements and prizes was Rs 75,000/-

KESST: Cheque disbursement to beneficiaries - July 30th, 2023:
KESST held its annual function for cheque disbursement to beneficiaries in Virajpet, Kodagu on 30th July 2023. Around 200 parents and beneficiaries attended the function. The guests included Appadanda Cariappa, Chairman of Triveni School; Colonel Cheppudira Muthanna, founder of Environment and Health Foundation [India] (EHF) and former President of Coorg Wildlife Society; Katimada Jimmy Annaiah, Maletira Srinivas, Secretary Virajpet Kodava Samaja; Kimudira Ravi Chengappa, Murvanda Roy Muthappa and Putharira Pappu Thimmaiah, Journalist. Mandapanda Sada Chengappa, President of KESST presided over the function. The book "Kodavas...Passion for Uniform" by Major General Kodendera Arjun Muthanna, Managing Trustee of KESST, containing biodatas of senior Kodava military officers and gallantry awardees was presented to the guests and beneficiaries.

KESST Office at Virajpet:
KESST office in the old Virajpet Kodava Samaja office building, adjoining Triveni School is fully functional. The office is open from 10 am to 5 pm from Monday to Saturday and is closed on Sundays and state government holidays.

Administrative Expenses 2021-22:
In keeping with the tenets of KESST, administrative expenses have been managed at 4 % of the annual expenditure.

Appeal for contributions for 2024-25

Two youths, one girl and one boy, have been identified and are being supported on a long-term basis of not less than two years, to prepare for Central and State Civil Services Examinations. Their fees for coaching institutions, board and lodging and pocket expenses are being catered for. Planned expenditure covering coaching fees, PG and other expenses was Rs 55,000/-.
Expected expenditure in FY 2024-25 is Rs 50,000/-.

Guidance for Army Jawan – Agniveer 2024 for Men and Women Military Police for South Karnataka (and Kodagu district:
Army has announced Agniveer 2024 for Men and Women Military Police for South Karnataka (and Kodagu district). Registration is open from 13 Feb 2024 to 22 March 2024. Candidates whose applications are accepted will have to take the online Common Entrance Exam from 22 April 2024 onwards. KEEST will facilitate online application and offer free coaching for the exam and physical tests.
Anticipated expenditure is expected to be around Rs 2,00,000/-.

Assistance for Livelihood:
KESST incurred an expenditure of Rs 2,50,000/- on the construction of two cowsheds for 2018 flood hit families to provide a livelihood.
Expected expenditure in FY 2024-25 is Rs 2,00,000/-.

2nd State-level Cross Country Race for Youth Eligible for Joining Defence Forces at Kushalnagar (Kodagu):
KESST along with Kushalnagar Ex-Servicemen Association organised the 2nd State Level Cross Country Race at Kushalnagar on 19 November 2023. The 1st Edition of the run was conducted on 10 October 2021. A total of 59 girls and 85 boys participated. The total expenditure for arrangements and prizes was Rs 75,000/-.
Expected expenditure in FY 2024-25 is Rs 1,00,000/-.

The Appeal:
In FY 2023-24 against a requirement of Rs 35 lakhs we were able to raise Rs 23.49 lakhs. Our anticipated budget for 2024-25 is Rs 45 lakhs. Of this amount, keeping aside the reserve fund and bank interest we are looking to raise around Rs 40 lakhs.

Your contributions and that of friends and families, however small, would go a long way in assisting KESST to support children in the programs listed above.
